IF TRADITION – and a refreshing beverage – is what you are looking for, then look no further than the Willoughby Hotel.

Locals have known this for years, but now it’s official, with the local watering hole taking out best traditional bar at the NSW Australian Hotel Association awards.

The Willoughby Hotel is well known for its range of boutique beers, great steaks and also for its spirit in hosting community events.
With 338 finalists across 32 categories, the Penshurst Rd venue fought off some tough competition to walk away with the prize.
While keeping the traditional vibe of the pub, marketing manager Adam Keeney said the hotel had been working hard to respond to local desires, and the past two beer fairs had encouraged the venue to stock more boutique beers.

“It has been a large scale event to run out of a suburban pub, but it’s been a great success,” he said. “Since then, we have made an effort to rotate about eight independent beers.

“People’s tastes are diversifying and with small bars popping up there’s a lot more competition.”

The Clovelly Hotel and The Central Hotel in Shellharbour won the overall hotel of the year awards in the city and country categories.
Graham Campion of the Longueville Hotel was named individual property owner of the year.

AHA NSW chief executive Paul Nicolaou said the awards set the standard for the nation’s hotel industry.
“The independent judges agreed on one thing – the quality of all finalists was extremely high,” he said.
